In a thrilling yet heartbreaking contest, the ULM Warhawks men's basketball team fell short in a nail-biter against Morehead State Eagles, 83-80. But the real story lies in the individual performances that kept the game alive.
The game started with a back-and-forth tie at 2-2, but the Eagles quickly took charge with a 4-point lead. MJ Russell, the Warhawks' sharp-shooter, hit a crucial three-pointer to keep the team within reach. And then, Krystian Lewis drove to the basket to tie the game at 9-9, setting the tone for a fierce battle.
Here's where the Eagles soared: they went on a 7-0 run, including a three-pointer, to take a 18-11 lead. But the Warhawks weren't going down without a fight. Renars Sondors and Wiggy Ball hit back-to-back threes, and Micah Caster added another, cutting the deficit to just two points.
And this is where Lavell Brodnex stepped up. He dominated the game with a layup, jumpers, and free throws, giving the Warhawks a slender 27-25 lead. But the Eagles weren't fazed, responding with a 7-0 run of their own to retake control.
With time ticking away in the first half, Russell and Brodnex combined for a late surge. Russell hit a shot from downtown, and Brodnex followed with a layup to tie the game at 32-32. The Warhawks then went on an 8-2 run, including triples from Russell and Sondors, to take a 6-point lead. However, the Eagles fought back, and the half ended with ULM leading 44-38.
The second half began with ULM on fire, thanks to Lewis and Alex Molofeev. But the Eagles, determined to turn the tide, responded with a 14-0 run, featuring two three-pointers, to take a commanding 67-58 lead.
But the Warhawks weren't done yet. Molofeev ended the drought with a layup, and Brodnex and Russell combined for an 8-0 run to tie the game at 69-69. The Eagles, however, hit a crucial three-pointer to regain the lead.
The final minutes were a rollercoaster. The Warhawks had a chance to win, down by just one point with less than seven seconds left. But a missed shot by Sondors and successful free throws by the Eagles sealed ULM's fate.
Russell's stellar performance continued, leading the team with 24 points, while Brodnex achieved a remarkable double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Lewis and Molofeev also contributed double-digit scores. But was it enough?
