Four people lost their lives and several others were injured when a taxi crashed into a train at the Butongole Railway crossing in Bugweri District. The incident happened Saturday around 2:50 pm on the Mbale–Tirinyi–Iganga highway in Busembatya.
Preliminary police reports indicate the taxi, with driver not yet identified, was traveling toward Mbale and collided with a moving train at the crossing, causing the vehicle to roll several times. Three occupants died at the scene, and a fourth died after arriving at Iganga Main Hospital. Multiple passengers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Emergency responders from traffic police arrived quickly, retrieved the bodies, and cleared the area to restore traffic flow. The deceased were transported to Iganga Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash, including whether railway crossing signals were ignored.
