The project, backed by a significant investment of £1.4 million, utilizes AI to analyze blood samples for markers of liver disease. Imagine the scale of this undertaking: the AI scrutinized the blood of 700,000 individuals aged 18 and over. The results? Approximately 700 patients were identified as having potential liver problems. Now, with funding from NHS England, this life-saving initiative is expanding its reach across the region.
Take Peter Ernest from Taunton, for instance. He, like many, was oblivious to the silent threat within. He shared, "The liver is known as the quiet killer. You don't know you have liver disease unless you have scans or tests." It was during a routine check at Musgrove Park Hospital in 2021 that Mr. Ernest discovered he had a fatty liver. His initial reaction? "I thought: I'm a bit overweight, fatty liver, didn't really register anything." This highlights the insidious nature of liver disease – often symptomless until it reaches a critical stage.
He underwent further treatment in Bristol and London, including a liver dissection. "I didn't feel ill, I wouldn't believe it if someone told me I had liver disease," he admitted. "You can go through life with liver disease and maybe pick it up too late."
Dr. Katie Denver, a clinical research fellow at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, emphasized the prevalence of liver disease. "Liver disease is actually very common," she stated. "We're very aware of heart disease and cancer. Liver disease never gets the same attention but it's very common." The program leverages existing blood tests from patients seeking care for unrelated issues. "So far we've written letters to 700 people. From those, hundreds of people have engaged, have been started on treatments. We've had a very positive response," Dr. Denver revealed. She added that more letters will be sent out in the coming months.
