Michael B. Jordan is currently grappling with the overwhelming emotions that come with significant recognition in his career. At just 38 years old, he has already established himself as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, thanks to his breakout roles in beloved television series from the early 2000s, such as The Wire and Friday Night Lights. He has since stepped into leading roles in major film franchises like Creed. Today marks a remarkable achievement for him, as he has received his very first Oscar nomination for his nuanced and compelling dual role in the film Sinners.
"Having been in this industry for quite some time now, I’ve always looked up to the Academy and admired the filmmakers and actors whose work has inspired me throughout my life," Jordan shared with The Hollywood Reporter. "To find myself included in those esteemed conversations and be recognized alongside such talent is truly a validating experience."
Yet, this is merely the beginning of the celebration for Jordan. His film Sinners has shattered records, securing an incredible total of 16 nominations — the highest number ever received by any film in the history of the Oscars. Additionally, filmmaker Ryan Coogler, with whom Jordan has collaborated extensively over the past decade, has also received nominations for his work as a director, writer, and producer (for best picture). This impressive showing brings a sense of affirmation to Jordan, who expressed his disbelief and joy during their phone conversation, often bursting into laughter or pausing as he processed the moment's significance.
When asked about his morning, Jordan admitted, "I didn’t wake up at 5:30 AM. I actually slept in! Currently, I’m working on editing The Thomas Crown Affair, so I wanted to see what awaited me upon waking. The love and support I’ve received since the nominations were announced is truly heartwarming. It’s surreal to be acknowledged in this manner."
Reflecting on the film's historic number of nominations, he remarked, "Honestly, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. This achievement speaks volumes about the film itself, the team behind it, and the audience who connected with the story. It’s clear that the film resonated deeply, and being recognized alongside so many talented individuals is something I find hard to articulate right now."
When asked about his first phone call after the nominations, Jordan revealed, "It was to my mom. That conversation was incredibly emotional. She’s the reason I pursued acting in the first place, so it meant everything to share that moment with her."
He chuckled as he mentioned missing Ryan's calls, noting, "I’m sure he’s busy making his own calls right now. We’ve been playing phone tag, but I’ll reach out to him soon."
This nomination is not only Jordan's first; it also marks the first for his co-stars Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo. "Woo! I’m absolutely thrilled for both Delroy and Wunmi! I couldn’t be happier for them and for our director, Coogler, along with everyone else involved," he exclaimed excitedly.
As he reflected on the current state of the film industry, Jordan pointed out, "This year has seen a remarkable resurgence in cinema attendance post-pandemic. The numbers and audience turnout for films demonstrate that when artists are given the opportunity and support, they can create cinematic experiences that draw people back to theaters. Just being part of that movement feels fantastic."
Looking back on Sinners' journey to this point, he said, "Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy, Warner Brothers, and David Zaslav believed in Coogler’s vision and took a significant risk with us. The payoff has been rewarding, and the path we’ve traveled has been intense yet swift. When you focus on building something great, people will come to see it."
As for his celebration plans, he humorously replied, "I’m heading straight back to the editing room! I need to get back to work. I’ll take some time tonight to really reflect on everything that’s happened. I don’t even know how to describe it yet, but there will definitely be signs of celebration!"
