Ag Days in Manitoba Linked to Measles Exposure
Public health officials have identified last month's Manitoba Ag Days at the Keystone Centre in Brandon as a potential source of measles exposure, prompting a health alert for attendees and visitors.
A Precarious Situation
Anyone who attended the event or visited nearby hotels, restaurants, and shops during the specified dates and times is advised to monitor for symptoms until February 13th. This includes those who were present on January 20th from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., January 21st and 22nd during the same hours, and those who dined at the Great Western Roadhouse inside the Canad Inns Destination Centre on January 20th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Symptoms and Precautions
Symptoms of measles typically appear within seven to 21 days after exposure. Early signs may include fever, runny nose, drowsiness, irritability, and red eyes. Small white spots may also develop inside the mouth or throat. If symptoms arise, individuals are urged to isolate at home and contact their healthcare provider, informing them of the potential measles exposure. Unimmunized household members should limit contact with others until the symptomatic person has been advised by their healthcare provider.
Vaccination and Risk Factors
Public health officials recommend the measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV) for individuals who were exposed and born in 1970 or later, have never received the vaccine, and have never had a measles infection. However, certain groups should avoid the vaccine, including infants under six months, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.
Measles: A Global Concern
Measles is a highly contagious disease spread through airborne droplets formed when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can lead to severe complications such as ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, and encephalitis. The disease is particularly dangerous for infants and young children and can be life-threatening.
