The race to prevent catastrophic climate change is far from over, according to a recent study. Despite the world already surpassing the 1.5C temperature threshold set by the 2015 Paris Agreement, there's still hope for a future within the safe limit. Researchers from Climate Analytics propose a roadmap that could keep global warming below 1.5C by 2100, but it requires immediate and drastic action.
The study highlights the urgency of the situation. Current national climate plans, known as NDCs, are insufficient. If left unchanged, they would lead to a global temperature increase of 2.5C to 2.8C by 2035, triggering irreversible changes. To stay within the 1.5C target, global emissions must decrease by 20% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels, and by 11% annually in the 2030s. Methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas, need to be reduced by 30% by 2035.
The key to success lies in renewable energy and electrification. Climate Analytics advocates for a rapid transition to renewable sources and the electrification of transport, heating, and industry. This approach could limit warming to 1.7C by 2050, with the potential to further reduce it to 1.5C by the end of the century through the elimination of fossil fuels and the implementation of carbon removal technologies.
However, the study also acknowledges the risks. Several tipping points, such as the melting of Greenland's ice sheet and the Amazon rainforest's potential shift from a carbon sink to a source, could be triggered as temperatures rise. These tipping points pose a significant threat, and scientists are closely monitoring them.
Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics, emphasizes the importance of taking immediate action. He states, 'Overshooting 1.5C is a political failure, but our roadmap shows it's still within our power to stay below this threshold. We must act now to minimize the risk of irreversible climate damage and tipping points.'
As world leaders gather in Belém, Brazil, for the Cop30 UN climate summit, the pressure is on to make meaningful commitments. The success of this summit and future climate action depends on the world's ability to unite and take bold steps towards a sustainable future.
