Paris just gained a new fashion landmark — and it’s not your typical boutique. The emerging footwear label Phileo has officially stepped into the retail scene with the opening of its very first store this Friday, signaling a bold new chapter for the brand.

Nestled at 37 Boulevard Beaumarchais, right on the edge of the lively Marais district, the 650-square-foot space is more than just a shop — it doubles as the brand’s Paris office. Sunlight pours through large pale-grey framed windows, revealing a minimalist but striking interior designed entirely by founder and designer Philéo Landowski himself. The setting feels intentionally unfinished: think a tunnel-like entrance leading to an airy open plan, with high ceilings bisected by soft-grey metal beams and raw compressed wood panels. Even the stockroom plays a starring role, with shelves of Phileo shoes on display behind a sleek partial partition — blurring the line between function and design.

Landowski explained to WWD that he wanted the space to remain adaptable. “I had an initial hesitation about opening a store,” he admitted, “because I feared a fixed space might limit creativity. The goal was to maintain flexibility while building something easily recognizable.” And that thinking shows — this isn’t a boutique frozen in time, but a space built to evolve.

But here’s where it gets interesting. The designer sees the new store not only as a commercial space but as what he calls “a space of full expression for the brand.” Phileo plans to host rotating exhibitions and collaborations that expand beyond footwear — projects that could just as easily belong in a design gallery as in a shoe store. Could this be the start of a new kind of retail, where art, design, and commerce blend into one creative ecosystem?

The inaugural centerpiece certainly supports that idea. Phileo’s opening installation features a reimagined version of the iconic DCM Chair, originally designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Vitra. This new edition gleams in hand-applied silver leaf over the signature plywood body — a bold reinterpretation that turns an industrial object into something deeply personal and tactile. The collaboration with Vitra was born from an earlier conversation years ago, but Landowski revived it while conceptualizing the store. “When designing this space, I wanted to push beyond shoes or apparel,” he said. “Transforming something so precise and instantly recognizable — the DCM — with a handcrafted touch just felt right.” The reworked chair, part of a special installation created with the Swiss design house, is available for preorder until January 17.

For a young designer, Landowski’s ascent has been nothing short of impressive. He launched Phileo in 2019 as a teenager, borrowing €15,000 to pursue his sneaker-making dream. In a few short years, he’s joined Dover Street Market’s brand development program, collaborated with Comme des Garçons, and consulted for outdoor giant Salomon. On top of that, he was a finalist for the 2025 ANDAM accessories award and clinched the 2024 Emerging Talent trophy at the Footwear News Achievement Awards.
