Chester Zoo's Director Warns of Real Financial Pressures for Many Zoos
A recent BBC investigation analyzed 129 zoos and aquariums, a mix of privately-owned companies and charities, and uncovered a concerning trend. Since 2022, 40% of these institutions have openly expressed concerns about financial pressures in media outlets and annual reports.
This situation mirrors broader economic challenges, such as soaring energy prices, but also highlights specific, non-negotiable costs. These include animal welfare, enclosure maintenance, food quality, and staffing requirements.
The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), representing over 100 zoos and aquariums, offered a nuanced perspective. They acknowledged that while zoos and aquariums are immensely popular, they are also grappling with financial hurdles.
BIAZA's research revealed that cost is a significant factor preventing families from visiting wildlife attractions. Consequently, this has led to a surge in ticket sales for those on lower incomes.
This revelation underscores the delicate balance between the public's love for zoos and the financial sustainability of these institutions.
