In southern California, finding mushrooms demands keen eyesight and an understanding of the terrain, resulting in more trained foragers. However, the general public must exercise caution. Jess Starwood, an herbalist and forager, emphasizes the importance of being extra cautious when picking mushrooms for consumption. She highlights that the death cap mushrooms can closely resemble edible species, and novice foragers may easily mistake them. Eating half a cap or less can be fatal, with mortality rates reaching up to 50%.

While the season for the death cap is over in southern California, it continues in the north.
