From a dream to dazzling reality: Cartier's Cafayate High Jewellery Necklace
High jewellery is often born from a spark of imagination, but at Cartier, it all begins with the stone. For the breathtaking Cafayate necklace, that meant two extraordinary opals, bursting with fiery red, vibrant orange, and sunny yellow hues. These gems immediately set the stage for the creative journey. "Everything starts with the stone—literally," explains Alexa Abitbol, Cartier’s high jewellery manufacture director, during a privileged peek inside the maison’s exclusive Parisian ateliers. "Designers are inspired by the stones, and they draw around them."
Then, the Cafayate necklace embarks on a meticulous journey through the high jewellery workshop, where skilled artisans transform ideas into tangible treasures. Jewellers, lapidaries, setters, and polishers collaborate to bring the design to life. The necklace's elegant, V-shaped cascade silhouette first takes shape in clay and wax. "There are certain volumes you simply cannot imagine in two dimensions," Abitbol reveals. Weekly meetings with designers ensure the piece's articulation, movement, and graceful curves are perfected.
Color is the very soul of this masterpiece. The opals' iridescent play of light is amplified by warm-toned Umba sapphires, creating a soft, sunlit glow. But here's where it gets controversial: Achieving this naturalistic color placement is far from simple. "Randomness looks simple, but it takes a human eye—an algorithm cannot make it come alive," Abitbol states. Each stone is carefully positioned, reconsidered, and repositioned—sometimes countless times—until the composition appears effortless. This highlights the irreplaceable role of human artistry in high jewellery.
Behind the scenes, the finishing touches are equally meticulous. Cartier’s polishers employ the centuries-old jaconas technique to smooth the stone settings, ensuring the opals and sapphires capture every possible ray of light. Even the hidden metalwork receives the same level of attention. "We polish the inside of a panther’s head—even though no one will ever see it—because the diamonds must shine perfectly," Abitbol shares. This philosophy underscores a commitment to perfection, where unseen details are as flawless as those on display.
When the final assembly is complete, the workshop gathers for what Cartier calls the “staff reveal”—the first time everyone sees the finished jewel. "The last week is when the magic happens; everything finally comes together," Abitbol reflects.
The result? A necklace that feels alive: opals that glow like embers, sapphires that ripple with warmth, and craftsmanship that disappears into pure, fluid color. The Cafayate necklace is a testament to the power of human artistry and the beauty that emerges when passion meets precision.
