The End of an Era? Brennan Othmann's time with the New York Rangers seems to be drawing to a close, and the writing is on the wall.
Othmann's recent recall lasted a mere week, during which the Rangers played three games. Despite having two spots open in the top six and bottom six roles, Othmann didn't see any ice time. Meanwhile, Jaroslav Chmelar, who was recalled alongside Othmann, immediately got game action, which is a telling sign.
Chmelar has been recalled twice by the Rangers and has played three games this season, outperforming Othmann, who has only played one game. Chmelar's consistent performance has solidified his position as the preferred prospect recall, and this pattern is hard to ignore.
But here's where it gets controversial... Is it solely about performance? Objectively, Chmelar has better offensive numbers in the AHL, but the difference isn't significant. So, why is Othmann being left behind?
And this is the part most people miss... It's not just about roles. Mike Sullivan has shown he's willing to give young players a chance in the top six, as seen with Gabe Perreault. Othmann had the opportunity but couldn't outshine Conor Sheary, who is currently occupying that spot. So, Sheary stays, and Chmelar gets the 4L spot.
The likely scenario is that Othmann's experiment with the Rangers is over. His performance in Hartford hasn't been enough to warrant these recalls, let alone an NHL spot. After 26 NHL games, it seems his time has come and gone.
Trade rumors have already started circulating, and it's expected that Othmann will be moved before the season ends. Unfortunately, his trade value has taken a hit, and Chris Drury's hesitation might have cost the team. A lesson learned, perhaps, but it's a tough pill to swallow for Othmann and his fans.
