BIG's Suzhou MoCA: A Contemporary Art Museum Inspired by Traditional Chinese Gardens (2025)

Prepare to be amazed! The Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art (Suzhou MoCA), a stunning architectural marvel designed by BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, is nearing completion in China. This isn't just another museum; it's a breathtaking reimagining of traditional Chinese garden architecture, set to grace the Jinji Lake waterfront.

Conceived as a collection of twelve interconnected pavilions under a continuous, flowing roof, the 60,000-square-meter complex is a modern interpretation of Suzhou's rich cultural heritage. Commissioned by the Suzhou Harmony Development Group and developed with ARTS Group and Front Inc., the museum is slated to open its doors in 2026.

The museum's inaugural exhibition, titled "Materialism," curated by BIG, promises a fascinating journey through the world of materials, from stone to recyclate.

The design itself is a masterclass in blending nature and architecture. Inspired by Suzhou's picturesque landscapes, the museum seamlessly integrates water features, lush vegetation, and the built environment. It draws inspiration from the lang, a covered corridor found in classical Chinese gardens, organizing its spaces as ten interconnected pavilions unified by undulating rooflines reminiscent of traditional tiled eaves. Two additional pavilions, extending over Jinji Lake, are planned for completion next year, linked to the main structure via covered walkways.

But here's where it gets controversial... The facades, clad in curved glass and warm-toned stainless steel, reflect the surrounding environment, creating a sense of harmony between the structure and its surroundings. Bridges and tunnels connect the galleries above and below ground, ensuring smooth circulation throughout the building. The museum's arrival plaza opens towards Jinji Lake, creating a public space that transitions naturally between urban, garden, and waterfront conditions.

Inside, natural light pours through skylights and clerestories, creating dynamic patterns of light and shadow. The main program includes four large galleries, complemented by a grand entrance, a multifunctional hall, a theater, and a restaurant. The surrounding landscape is designed as a series of interconnected gardens that seamlessly blend into the lakeshore. The museum aims for China's GBEL 2-Star Green Building certification, incorporating passive cooling, shading, and locally sourced materials.

The "Materialism" exhibition, curated by BIG, expands on Bjarke Ingels' year-long editorial series for Domus magazine, where each issue focused on a single material. The exhibition will feature large-scale mock-ups and models of twenty BIG projects, including Google Bay View, The Plus, and the Danish Maritime Museum, exploring how diverse materials shape architectural expression.

And this is the part most people miss... Each gallery's seating and signage are made from the materials they represent, like rammed earth, terrazzo, and rust stone, emphasizing the tactile relationship between matter and design.

In other exciting news from BIG, the studio's Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan was recognized as a winner of the 2025 Holcim Awards. In France, BIG revealed the design for The Sail, a new congress center in Rouen, featuring a sweeping timber roof. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, the City Council has approved the 670 Mesquit mixed-use complex in the Arts District, paving the way for the phased construction of BIG's first project in the city.
